In the Winter of 1996 the Buil & Giné family decided to return to wine elaboration in the Priorat region.
Our family has been recently active in the food retail business and, before that, both our grand and great-grand parents had been wine makers and merchants.
Bringing this tradition back to life, the present generation is dedicated to growing grapes and producing wine in each of the two areas of ‘Denominacions d’Origen’ of the region, Priorat and Montsant.
This dream started to materialize during the Spring of 1998 when we introduced our first wine, Giné Giné 1997. The name consists of our grandfathers two last names; he was a wine grower and was twice elected President of the Cooperativa Agrícola Falsetenca.
D.O.Q Priorat Geographic characteristics:
Priorat is a small, hidden and mountainous area, located to the east of Tarragona, Catalonia’s most southerly province.
Priorat is actually a winding valley characterised by its hard and dry climate, its steep terraces and the peculiar slate lands (‘llicorellas’). All of which influence decisively in the yield and quality of wines and grapes.
The wines of Priorat generally share alike the richness of the traditional varieties (Garnacha and Cariñena), and the noblesse of the most prominent grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay or Syrah).
The elaborated wine from Priorat combines wine from old vineyards, which are more than 40 years old, with the new ones
Priorat, international reputation wines :
Historically three well differentiated phases can be distinguished in the producing life of Priorat:
• The first one is situated in S.XI and S.XII when the Cartujano Monks of Scala Dei cultivated vineyards and elaborated wines. That wines became well known as PRIORAT WINES OF SCALA DEI.
• The second and modern phase had its starting in 1975 when the denomination of origin Priorat was granted his status and the FAO published an extensive report where it was clearly determined that the area assembled all the conditions to produce one of the best wines in the world.
• In year 2000 the D.O. Priorat reached the level of ‘calificada’ (classified). But in the 90’s five persons, who were willing to reach the peak of the world’s oenology joined their creativity, ambition and equipment and decided to elaborate and commercialise new and vigorous high quality Priorat wines from both autochthonous and foreign grapes. Other wines houses followed the new style and were succeed in the international wine markets. Nowadays, the wines from D.O.Q. Priorat are deserving world-wide, unprecedented in the modern history of Spanish wine.
La D.O. Montsant, created in August 2001, is a new Catalan denomination of origin in the region of Priorat.
There are few differences between D.O.Q. Priorat and D.O. Montsant. The most vineyards in Montsant are old but currently some of them are been replanted introducing new varieties of grapes. The land in D.O. Montsant is slate and granite.
The plantations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot are being carried out, combined with old Cariñena and Gancha grapes. Innovation with tradition in order to obtain high quality wines.
The future of the region is guaranteed by prestigious winemakers from Priorat, who are also producing wines in the D.O. Montsant
Then the effort and tenacity of the wine projects carried out, have situated the D.O. Montsant as a new Spanish reference for sterling quality.
